It was no mean feat for Centre College, a small liberal arts college in the heart of Kentucky, to land an event as large as the Oct. 11 U. S. vice presidential debate between Rep. Paul Ryan and VP Joseph Biden. The event meant that 3,200 members of the political campaigns, the Secret Service and credentialed members of the press would descend on the 1,350 student institution, whether it was ready or not.

Scientists found that the compound piceatannol, found naturally in the skin of grapes and other fruits blocks an immature fat cells ability to develop and grow, opening a door to a potential method to control obesity. The lead study author, Dr. Kee Hong Kim found that piceatannol, an analog of resveratrol found in grapes and other fruit, is converted to piceatannol in humans following its consumption. The team tested piceatannol in cultured immature fat cells called preadipocytes to determine if the compound inhibited the maturity process that results in fully developed fat cells, capable of storing body fat and contributing to obesity. Dr. Kim commented We consider that adipogenesis is an important molecular target to delay or prevent fat cell accumulation and, hopefully, body fat mass gain. The team found that piceatannol bound to the insulin receptor on the immature fat cells, effectively blocking insulins ability to control normal cellular cycling resulting in mature adipocytes. The grape derived compound stimulated the activation of special genes necessary for the fat cell maturation process. The study authors concluded Piceatannol actually alters the timing of gene expressions, gene functions and insulin action during adipogenesis, the process in which early stage fat cells become mature fat cells in the presence of piceatannol, you can see delay or complete inhibition of adipogenesis. Similar in structure to resveratrol, scientists believe piceatannol may also exert some of the same properties to help combat cancer, heart disease and neurodegenerative conditions. Piceatannol is yet another natural compound that has demonstrated the ability to influence genetic expression to inhibit the formation of adipocytes or alter metabolism to help achieve weight management goals alongside resveratrol, green tea catechins EGCG and irvingia gabonensis.

Being a marine biologist isnt all scuba diving. However, you do need certain skills in the field, and learning to scuba dive is one of them. Youll probably also need to learn how to operate small watercraft, all aspects of water safety, lab safety principles and how to work in various field situations. Youll spend some time in the lab, where you might dissect specimens or raise captive animals, marine organisms and plants to study how they live. You'll also learn how to care for and feed these animals and plants. Although a bachelors degree in marine biology might get you an entry level job, if you really want to be successful in the field, you need a doctorate, according to marine biologist Maddalena Bearzi, Ph. D. , of Ocean Conservation Society, who studies the ecology and conservation of marine mammals. Writing in a September 2013 article for National Geographic, Bearzi notes that graduate school is important, but so are other forms of education. She recommends that aspiring marine biologists take courses outside their specialty, such as ichthyology, conservation and oceanography. Statistics, she notes, is mandatory for any marine biologist.

In a statement issued last Friday, Grand Bahama Police Superintendent Basil Rahming said caregiver Jeff Kathrain found the stocky teen unconscious in the bathroom; he was later pronounced dead at Freeport's Rand Memorial Hospital. According to the statement, Jett was last seen going into the bathroom on Thursday. Mr. Travolta attempted CPR to revive his son, who may have died in his arms before an emergency medical technician took over, Usmagazine. com reported, citing the actor's lawyers Michael McDermott and Michael Ossi. He did mouth to mouth until they had to physically remove John to take Jett to the hospital, Mr. Ossi told People magazine. The media spotlight has also turned to the Travoltas' adherence to the Church of Scientology, the religious philosophy founded in 1954 by American science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Scientology does not recognize autism, which causes seizures in one in four cases, according to the National Institute of Health. The family has denied that Jett was autistic, maintaining instead that at age 2, he was diagnosed with Kawasaki syndrome, a disease that affects young children, inflaming blood vessels and causing high fevers.
